Updated: Aug 29

Stitching your own bookmarks is a delightful way to express your creativity and personalize your reading experience. It´s also a perfect way to learn new skills and make gifts for your friends and family that love reading. In this post, I’ll guide you through the steps to make a stylish tassel that enhances both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of your stitched bookmark made by one of amjcreativity bookmark kits.

Why Add a Tassel?

A tassel is more than just a decorative piece; it helps you quickly locate your page in a book and saves space on your night stand. Moreover, tassels come in various colors and designs, allowing you to showcase your personal style while traveling with your favorite book.

By creating a tassel that matches your bookmark, you can transform an already wonderful project into something truly special.

Materials Needed for Making a Tassel

Before you get started, gather these materials (they are included in the amjcreativity bookmark kits):

  • Machine Embroidery Thread: Each kit comes with machine embroidery threads wound up on a paper thread holder.

  • Scissors: For cutting the floss (not included in the kit).

  • Needle: Use a tapestry needle included in the kit.

  • Embroidery Thread: Use the metal threads included in the kit to make a core.

Having a clean workspace will help keep your materials organized while you craft.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Tassel

Step 1. Make a tight core out of metallic embroidery threads.

A needle threaded with silver string rests on a dark, felt background. The needle lies horizontally, piercing the fabric.

Start by cutting a length of a metal embroidery floss to about 4x the length of the bookmark. Fold the floss in half and insert the loop around the needle and twist.

The tread will start folding. Keep the tension and continue twisting until it folds together making a tight core.

Step 2. Insert the core under the machine embroidery threads on the spool, make a knot.

Take the cardboard piece that is included with the kit and insert the twisted core under the variegated threads on the spool. Make a knot approximately spool length from the edge. If you want your tassel to be bigger, wrap any of the left over embroidery threads from the kit after you have stitched the vinyl top.

Step 3. Hold the core and thread tightly, cut the bottom and don't let go.

Turn the loop so the knot faces down and is hidden. Insert your index finger around the metallic core and hold the spool with your thumb and middle finger. With the other hand cut the threads at the bottom, slide the paper spool away and don't let go!

Step 4. Wrap the metallic thread several times around the top and secure with a knot.

Thread the needle with metallic embroidery floss. Twist around the top to fasten the threads just below the core. Make a knot securing the tassel. This knot needs to be secure, as it holds the tassel together.

Step 5. Trim the Bottom of the Tassel

A small, two-toned tassel with a loop sits on a textured black background. The tassel has silver and black threads, creating a simple, elegant look.

Now, it's time to give your tassel a polished look. Use your scissors to carefully trim the bottom so all strands are even. A well-shaped tassel can significantly enhance the overall appearance.

Step 6. Attach the Tassel to Your Bookmark

Thread a needle with the core and insert it at the top of the bookmark, pushing through all the layers. Now it's easy to secure it by making a loop.

Tips for Customization

To give your tassel a personal touch, play around with different color combinations and textures from your stash. For instance, using metallic threads can add a touch of glamour, while combining soft acrylic yarn with rough jute creates a beautiful texture contrast.

Experiment with the length of your tassel. Longer tassels provide a more dramatic look, while shorter ones maintain a chic and minimalist appeal.
