Textile Art: Journey Through the Land of Fire and Ice

Updated: Mar 17

Art has the power to express complex emotions, ideas and culture. In the realm of textile art, that expression becomes even more vibrant and tangible. I am thrilled to share my latest commission - COUNCIL, which draws inspiration from the stunning landscapes of Iceland—the Land of Fire and Ice, connections between work collages driven by excellence towards customer service and execution of complex projects, intertwined with other obligations of modern life through several years of working as a dynamic team, the COUNCIL in a very complex, ever changing organization.

The power of team work is evidence.

The connection is unique.

The respect is absolute.

This team nailed it!

A Unique Commission: The Vision

This textile art is designed to reflect the natural beauty of Iceland, known for its rugged terrain, volcanic activity, and majestic glaciers. For the design, I worked closely with the client to incorporate elements that resonate emotionally and aesthetically with his vision. The goal was to create a piece that could be displayed as a unique work of art reflecting a team, the COUNCIL, that had been working together for years, but recently was split up due to strategical changes within the organization. The individuals in the team live in several locations, so the work needed to be split up, yet work together as a coherent piece.

For instance, we wanted the textile to embody both the warmth of volcanic landscapes and the coolness of the icy glaciers. This contrast symbolizes the duality of Icelandic nature, as well as the characteristic of a team of strong, highly motivated individuals with passion for excellency, creating a dynamic visual experience.

The Creative Process: Materials and Techniques

In crafting this piece, I selected high-quality materials that echo Iceland's natural palette—of white snow, black sand and flowing lava.

I used black plastic threads to sew together two pieces of canvas expressing the drifting of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates that slowly drift apart at a rate of few centimeters per year creating fissures, rift valleys and volcanic activity. The plastic thread represents team work. It's a little elastic, it can be stretched, it allows for dynamic discussions without leaving unresolvable conflicts, it's strong and doesn't break easily.

Each piece is linked to allow for a seamless running flow of ideas, problem solving and continues development, moving forward as a team with the ultimate goal of execution to deliver the best product in the market. The last piece in this series is linked to the first - continues flow of ideas through the many years of the COUNCIL incredible respect for the power of positive communications.

The techniques employed were a mix of traditional hand sewing and mixed media. Merging fiber art and mixed media allowed me ultimate artistic freedom to express the client's views for this commission that evolved through different stages of the work with the client's input and ideas that drew from his experience and vision for this work. Hence the letters are made of black Icelandic sand from Reynisfjara, Iceland, as well as the lava between the plates creating the ultimate link with the clients vision.

The Power of Narrative in Textile Art

Every piece of textile art tells a story.  Storytelling transforms a textile piece from a mere decorative item into a meaningful experience. For this project, the narrative stems from Iceland’s dramatic landscapes and the power of strong teamwork. On one side, you have the vibrant volcanic soils; on the other, the chilly allure of ice, giving a visual story of the perfect team navigating the complex reality of delivery of excellency to different shareholders in a highly dynamic and demanding ever changing work environment. This duality invites viewers to ponder their own interpretations.

Final Touches: Installation and Display

Once the piece is completed, the final phase is to split this piece up into 7 individual works that will be displaying in each of the team member chosen space located around the USA.

To maximize engagement, I decided to write this blog to included a brief narrative explaining the inspiration behind the commission—a reminder of a story interwoven within the art itself. I hope my work captures this COUNCIL dynamic teamwork intertwining with artistic creativity.
